Two years in a row, I was commissioned to write and perform my poetry for the One Planet Summit. While flying to California to perform, I couldn't stop thinking about this question.

So I wrote "The Lottery of Birth."

"Taking Back My Light" offers readers an inside look into the poetic pages of my diary, including actual photocopies from my journal as young as elementary school.

You'll journey through the bullying I experienced starting at age five, the exclusion, social rejection, invisibility, and isolation I continued to face through high school, and the depression that followed. It confronts the damaging messages young people absorb from teachers, media, and entertainment, and ultimately ends with the courageous decision to fight for my life and take back my light.

I was so moved by how many of you resonated with my words at our Q&A and readings. So many parents and educators said my poems need to be in schools and that they're a powerful tool for mentoring young people.
